Nello Altomare was first elected as the MLA for Transcona in 2019. Born, raised and having lived in Transcona, Altomare was the son of Italian immigrants who came to Canada seeking a better life.

He was a retired teacher and principal in the River East Transcona School Division, known for his passion for education. As the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Learning, Altomare implemented Canada’s first universal school food program, ensuring that no child in Manitoba has to go to school hungry. He was also a mentor and friend to many.

Altomare leaves behind his wife, two children, sisters, family, and a community that will miss him dearly.
