Tom Lindsey is a longtime labour activist who understands the priorities of everyday families and working people. Raised on a family farm in southern Saskatchewan, Tom moved to Flin Flon in 1974. He meant to live there for a year, but stayed forever—drawn to the fight for social justice at the heart of the workers’ movement.
Tom spent his career working for the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company (Hudbay Minerals). He became active in the labour movement with the Steelworkers Union Local 7106, first as a shop steward in the early 1980s, then as Recording Secretary in 1986 – a position he held for nine years. In 1994, he became the Health and Safety Representative for the Local until he retired in early 2014.
Tom has worked on committees with government, labour and industry on many laws around workplace health and safety and the Workers’ Compensation Board. He has participated in public hearings and made multiple presentations on these issues, as well as on the environment.
He was also a member of the Minister’s Standing Committee for the Review of The Operation of Mines Regulation for over 20 years.
Tom is proud to stand up for all working people on the things that matter most, including health care, good jobs and the environment. He has volunteered extensively in the Flin Flon and Snow Lake areas as a speaker with Safe Workers of Tomorrow and as a member of the Flin Flon and District Labour Coordinating Committee, the Steelworkers Northern Area Council and the Steelworkers District 3 Committee.
Aside from labour activism, Tom and his wife Sharon enjoy camping, kayaking and golf.
