When Uzoma was first elected in 2019, they became the first non-binary MLA in the Manitoba Legislature, and one of the first Black MLAs elected in Manitoba’s history.
They served as the NDP’s Critic for Health, Seniors and Active Living, a role which they used to stand up to PC health care cuts and attacks on nurses, doctors and health care workers. Throughout the COVID pandemic, Uzoma called for more transparent and comprehensive public health data, more protections for seniors in long term care and faster access to surgeries for patients.
Prior to their election, Uzoma worked as a psychiatric nurse and addictions specialist and is a former basketball player with the University of Winnipeg and the Canadian National Basketball team. They volunteered in leadership positions with several organizations, including The Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art and the Women’s Health Clinic. Their bill to recognize Somali Heritage Week passed in 2020.
