NDP will launch sexual assault nurse examiner strategy
$2.4m per year to support seven new positions, capital improvements
September 24, 2023 | Treaty 1 and Dakota Territory, Homeland of the Red River Métis, Winnipeg - NDP candidates Uzoma Asagwara and Nahanni Fontaine were joined by nurses to announce an NDP government would launch a provincial strategy to ensure sexual assault care is available wherever and whenever Manitobans need it.
“For those who are sexually assaulted, getting the physical and emotional care they need right away couldn’t be more important,” said Asagwara. “For years this program this essential program has been neglected and mismanaged. It’s time for a government that works with nurses to provide the best care for survivors.”
An NDP government would develop a new provincial strategy to ensure that sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE) are available 24/7 in urban, rural and northern Manitoba. An NDP government would hire 7 FTE nursing positions to support this commitment. The NDP would also make improvements to the waiting room to improve comfort and care for sexual assault patients at HSC and future capital improvements to support the SANE program.
The NDP would prioritize consultation with Indigenous organizations and leaders to place culturally appropriate wraparound care at the heart of the new strategy. The NDP’s plan would address gaps in coverage in northern and rural areas, where people often have to travel to Winnipeg and endure extended waits to receive care.
