Bill 225 would measure social, environmental impact of legislation 

As Manitoba falls farther behind on meeting it’s climate targets, the NDP introduced a bill that would hold the PC government accountable and promote an equitable and sustainable recovery from the pandemic.  

“Manitobans want to improve the health of our environment and grow our economy in a way that is fair and equitable,” said NDP Finance Critic Mark Wasyliw. “But under the PCs we are falling behind on climate change, women and non-binary Manitobans are paid less than their male counterparts, and only the wealthy are getting ahead. We need better tools to hold the PC government accountable. That’s why this bill is so important. Families deserve to know the real impact of the PCs cuts.” 

The NDP’s bill would ensure that the government budget is analyzed from a Gender-Based Analysis Plus lens. It would put economic and social inclusion as well as greenhouse gas emissions at the forefront of budgetary decisions. The bill would require the government to be transparent about the impact of their budget by reporting on these important areas.  

“We can build a brighter future for Manitoba families and it starts with taking an honest look at how 6 years of PC cuts have held us back,” said NDP Leader Wab Kinew. “Unlike the PCs our team is committed to growing the economy fairly, supporting workers and entrepreneurs, and investing in Manitoba Hydro to create clean energy jobs.”
