Kinew Promises to Cut the Gas Tax

After committing to not raising the PST, Manitoba NDP Leader Wab Kinew announced additional measures today to make life more affordable for families. Kinew made announcements in Winnipeg and Selkirk where he promised to cut the gas tax if the Manitoba NDP forms government on October 3rd.

Heather Stefanson is out of touch with regular families and all she’s been doing is wasting time and playing games that go nowhere,” said Kinew. “You work hard for every dollar, but inflation hurts. That’s why a Manitoba NDP government will save you 14 cents a litre every time you fill up. It’s one important step we can take to make life more affordable for families.”

The PC government currently charges Manitobans 14 cents a litre in provincial fuel taxes on clear gasoline and diesel. Kinew also pledged to cut the gas tax on marked fuels. Other provinces have suspended their gas taxes as relief for regular people.

Kinew said the Manitoba NDP Government would also hold gas companies accountable by giving the Public Utilities Board new powers to review, investigate and regulate retail gasoline prices in Manitoba. And he promised the Manitoba NDP would take action to ensure gas prices are fair and stop anti-competitive behaviour.

For too long it’s been too hard for Manitobans to make ends meet,” he said. “It’s time to change that.”
