As PC cuts to health care force another ER in the Interlake to close, Evergreen School Division has to choose which essential programs to cut because of PC education cuts.  

“Every child in Manitoba deservers access to quality education. That means special high school courses, Junior Kindergarten, field trips, band and extra-curricular activities,” said NDP Education Critic Nello Altomare. “These programs are an essential part of a well-rounded education. But unfortunately for students in the Interlake, these programs are in danger because the PCs continue to underfund education. It’s shameful that the government would put their bottom line ahead of our kids while they continue to make cuts. Families in the Interlake deserve a government that invests in their children's education.” 

Years of PC funding cuts have reduced the province’s share of education by 6% and it’s taking a toll. A recent survey put out by Evergreen School Division says that PC cuts have put local programming “at risk” and asks families to choose which programs they should cut, listing Junior Kindergarten, field trips, extra-curriculars, universal band programs, school fee subsidies and special high school courses. This survey comes after the announcement of an extended closure of the Eriksdale ER in the Interlake.  

“Families in the Interlake deserve quality education for their kids and a hospital that has doctor who can see them in an emergency,” said NDP Leader Wab Kinew. “These are basic, essential services that every community needs to thrive, but the PC government can’t be trusted to provide them. Just like we fought Bill 64, our NDP team will fight back against PC cuts to education and health care in the Interlake so families can get a good education and quality care in their home community.”
