Protect Public Health in the Justice System

Manitobans who live and work in our correctional facilities are at high risk of contracting COVID-19. The province has a responsibility to protect the public health of all Manitobans.

That's why the Manitoba NDP is urging the province to take steps to mitigate the spread of the virus in Manitoba's correctional facilities and keep those within our justice system safe.

We are calling on the provincial Justice Minister to prepare and make public a detailed action plan for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 among those living and working in the province’s correctional facilities. This plan should include:

  • Fast-tracking scheduled early releases, after inmates have tested negative for COVID-19, and ensure their community reintegration plan accounts for social distancing;
  • Ensuring correctional officers and support staff have access to PPE and provide clear mandates of when that equipment must be worn.
  • Providing public health training for correctional officers who may have to come into close contact with inmates for health emergencies.

I SUPPORT Protecting Public Health in the Justice System.
