Mike is a teacher, community activist and active member of the Louis Riel Teachers’ Association. Mike was born and raised in Winnipeg and he would like to give back to the Riel constituency.
Mike has worked as a public school teacher for sixteen years and has spent the majority of his career working with students with diverse needs in the Louis Riel School Division. Mike continues to teach English, history, geography and global issues at Glenlawn Collegiate, where he also serves as a Team Leader. Mike knows that Brian Pallister is more focused on cuts to education than improving student learning and he believes we can do better when it comes to funding our public education system, keeping class-sizes small, and ensuring students get the support they need.
As part of Mike's commitment to excellence in education, he currently serves on Louis Riel School Division Teachers' Association executive as a member at large and has served previously as a school representative for over a decade. He also served on the Collective Bargaining Committee, Personal Professional Development Fund Committee, and Public Relations Committee during that time.
Mike is a former University of Manitoba Bisons Track and Field Team member, two-time Canadian University Championships bronze medalist (4 x 200m and 4 x 400m), and a five-time Academic All-Canadian. He also competed in two Canada Games, one Western Canada Games and one Canadian Junior Track and Field Championship.
Mike has worked as a coach for students from grades 4 to 12 in numerous sports, including basketball, volleyball, track and field, and badminton. Mike continues to be active by taking Taekwondo at Greendell Community Centre with his son, Landon.
Mike holds a Master of Arts in Political Studies from the University of Manitoba, with a focus on Canadian Government and Public Administration. He also holds a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Physical Education.
Mike has lived in Riel with his wife, Michelle, for the past 12 years, raising their two kids, Landon and Nyah and black lab retriever, Piper.
